Dance and contemporary art collide in Ballet Philippines’ “Opera” on February 13-16

Enter the world of Gabriel Barredo’s acclaimed creation in Ballet Philippines’ season ender, “Opera”. This production brings a synergy between artists and art forms, with French choreographer Redha transforming the groundbreaking installation into a contemporary ballet premiering at the CCP Main Theater on February 13 & 14, with a Fundraising Gala on February 16 at 8:00PM.

The original “Opera” exhibition was first presented at Silverlens Galleries in January 2015, and was recently toured to Singapore last November in time with the opening celebrations of the National Gallery Singapore. For the ballet, Barredo is creating a staggering array of new sculptures, which will comprise the production’s set design.

Redha
Redha’s choreography will guide us along a journey into a new experience of art. Envisioning his dancers on bare feet, pointe shoes, and stilettos, he is set to present a work that is stimulating, sensual, and groundbreaking. “Being part of this production is a great thrill for me,” shares Redha. “Meeting Gabby [Barredo] and seeing his work up close was very inspiring.”

“’Opera’ is shaping up to be one of the most innovative productions that Ballet Philippines has produced in a long time,” muses BP’s Artistic Director, Paul Alexander Morales. “We invite everyone to support it and to catch its limited performance run.”

Barredo’s installation evokes an opening up, inviting us to view the body itself, asking us to confront the mortality of the corpse, to contemplate upon its passing and empathize if not make sense of its beauty. The libretto explores a man’s journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and rebirth.
Gabriel Barredo studied Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas. His 30-foot installation entitled Asphalt was one of the highlights of the inaugural Art Fair Philippines in 2013. His awards and recognitions include: the gold medal at the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Competition in 1981 and 1982; the gold medal at the Metrobank Foundation Annual Art Competition in 1985; the 1st Grand Prize at the Philippine Art Awards (1994); and, the Juror’s Choice at the ASEAN Art Awards held in Singapore in 1994.

Based in France, Redha has choreographed for several of the world’s leading dance companies such as the Bolshoi Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The National Ballet of Cuba, Le Jeune Ballet de France, The Het Nationale Ballet, and the San Francisco Ballet. He has had his own dance company since 1981 and nowadays literally works all over the world, from Africa and Europe to the Americas and Asia. He has created choreographies for feature films of Costa Gavras, Roman Polanski, Alain Delon and Francis Ford Coppola.

Presented by Ballet Philippines and Silverlens, “Opera” features a libretto by Yvette Tan and Erwin Romulo, original music by Malek Lopez, lighting design by John Batalla, and costumes by James Reyes. This production is in cooperation with the Embassy of France.

Repertory Philippines to stage mystery and intrigue with The Game’s Afoot

The Game’s Afoot premiered in Cleveland, Ohio in 2011 to great acclaim, with The Cleveland Plain praising the “twists that cause the audience to gasp.” Similarly, the Cleveland Examiner said, “From the intriguing opening mini play within a play to the surprise last scene a split second before final curtain, The Game’s Afoot gives you everything you love about great live theatre. In 2012, the play won Best Mystery Play at the Edgar Allan Poe Awards, an award-giving body hosted by the Mystery Writers of America.
The instant gratification that the Internet and social media provides has made the length for intrigue and questionable circumstances obsolete. Because of this, anything done in secrecy has a mystique that entices even the least curious cat.

The Philippine stage is in for a treat as Repertory Philippines is staging the murder mystery The Game’s Afoot for the launch of its 79th season. Written in 2011 by Ken Ludwig, the play follows William Gillette, a Broadway star known for his masterful portrayal of Holmes. After a spectacular run of the play-within-the-play, he invites his castmates to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry… until someone turns up dead. Gillette must put on his detective hat and solve the mystery before the killer strikes again.

“The Game’s Afoot is a great play to start 2016,” shares director Miguel Faustmann. “It’s a wicked comedy and whodunit. In this day and age where everything is served to us on social media and the Internet, it’s nice to not know things and be part of a journey to a truth.”

Curiously, William Gillette is a real-life Broadway actor who made a name for himself in the early part of the 20th century for portraying Holmes. He wrote the play Sherlock Holmes in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the famed detective. Gillette has portrayed Holmes in 1,300 performances spread over thirty years, and he used his royalties to create a castle along Connecticut River, which is also the setting of The Game’s Afoot.

Ludwig was inspired to write the play while watching Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in history. Prior to The Game’s Afoot, he has written six shows on Broadway and another six on the West End. Throughout his career, he has won three Tony Awards nominations, two Laurence Olivier awards, and two Helen Hayes awards.

Like a good mystery, part of The Game’s Afoot’s fun is the interactive aspect of watching. Besides laughing at the comedy of the farce, audiences are engaged by trying to figure out who the killer is.

Paul Holmes plays William Gillette, a Broadway star known for his portrayal of detective Sherlock Holmes, both in the play and in real life. In The Game’s Afoot, he invites his castmates to his Connecticut castle for a weekend, where someone ends up dead. Gillette must channel his inner Holmes to track the killer and stop the next death.
“The audience plays an active role in the play,” enthuses Faustmann. “Usually, guests just passively watch theater. Here, they participate by trying to figure out who the killer is. Is it Aggie Wheeler? Or Simon Bright? Or maybe it’s William Gillette himself. It’ll drive the audience crazy trying to guess who did it!”

“Mystery is something that’s missing in Philippine entertainment,” he adds. “Yes, there are subplots in movies and teleseryes but none that revolve around mystery. We need to bring back the glamour of intrigue. Mystery evokes wonder. There’s magic in mystery.”

The Game’s Afoot will be staged from January 15 to February 7, 2016 at Onstage Theater in Greenbelt 1, Makati City. Ticket prices ranges from P418 to P836. For more details regarding The Game’s Afoot, call Repertory Philippines at 843-3570. Book tickets through TicketWorld at 891-9999 or visit their website at www.ticketworld.com.ph. (PR)

Mabining Mandirigma to return this February at CCP Stage.

With the overwhelming success of its initial run last July 2015 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the support of the National Commission for the Culture and Arts, brings back the hit musical play, Mabining Mandirigma to cap off its 29th theatre season. Written by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, this musical play foregrounds the legal and diplomatic heroism of Apolinario Mabini.

Coincidentally, as the culminating production to commemorate the sesquicentennial birth of who was considered the brains of the revolution, Mabining  Mandirigma, once again promises audience to an exciting journey through history as it utilizes Steampunk, a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th Century industrial steam- powered machinery, as a fitting backdrop to an already action-packed musical.

Mabining Mandirigma, A Steampunk Musical runs at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (LittleTheater) from February 19 to March 13, 2016, Fridays to Sundays, with 3:00PM (Matinee) and 8:00PM (Gala) shows.

Apolinario Mabini
1898, as President Emilio Aguinaldo’s Adviser, Cabinet President, and first Foreign Minister, Mabini displayed a warrior’s spirit that belied his paralytic body and a principled character that could not be compromised by considerations of personal aggrandize mentor political expediency. Without fear, he fought the ilustrado-cacique clique in the Malolos Government that issued government bonds that would allow them full control of the new government’s finances and activities. When Aguinaldo replaced Mabini with the political chameleon Paterno as cabinet president, Mabini, now much weakened by sickness, continued to support the masses fighting the American invaders, even long after Aguinaldo and his generals had capitulated to the new conquerors. To cut him off from the revolutionists, the Americans exiled Mabini to Guam. In 1902, his captors shipped him back to the Islands because he promised to finally take his oath of allegiance to the United States of America. But as soon as he landed in Manila, he pursued his revolutionary activities until his demise by cholera in 1903. Apolinario Mabini’s life is a testimony that there exists a politician who can forge and sharpen the sword of his integrity in the smithy of even the dirtiest kind of politics and still emerge unbroken, pure, and unblemished.

MabiningMandirigma

Directed by the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado and written by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, the stellar cast is led by Leisl Batucan essaying the role of Apolinario Mabini; promising young  2 tenors Arman Ferrera David Ezra alternate as Emilio Aguinaldo, while Carol Bello plays Mabini’s Mother, Dionisia. They are joined by the promising talents from the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company. The power house Artistic Staff is comprised by Jed Balsamo for Music, Denisa Reyes for Choreography, Toym Imao for Set Design, Katsch Catoy for Lighting Design, GA Fallarme for Projection Design, James Reyes for Costume Design, Barbie Tan-Tiongco for Technical Direction and TJ Ramos for Sound Design.  (PR)

Sony Channel’s Rofling Sunday.

Photos courtesy of Sony Channel Philippines.
Sony Channel rolls out ROFLing Sundays with a trio of comedies this January: Bad Judge, Odd Mom Out, and Younger, all premiering this January 17. All showcasing a fun and fierce female lead, these shows take entertainment to new and better heights.

ODD MOM OUT STARS NOVELIST-FASHIONISTA IN HER OWN TV SERIES
Odd Mom Out stars its creator, Jill Kargman as a fictional character based on herself, Jill Webber. Set in the wealthy, cosmopolitan jungle of New York’s Upper East Side, Jill sets out to navigate the good, the bad, and the ugly of the elite mommy clique. Finding herself sticking out like a sore thumb in a bevy of shiny, seemingly perfect and ultra trendy mommies, Jill sees the world around her in a different lens.

The comedy satire is based on her novel published in 2007, Momzillas. It also stars Andy Buckley (The Office), Joanna Cassidy (Six Feet Under), Sean Kleier (Madam Secretary), and Abby Elliot (Saturday Night Live).

Best enjoyed in “small doses,” (as perhaps because it offers a very nauseatingly honest take on the upper crusts’ ridiculous excesses), Odd Mom Outis a welcome treat to add in television’s  line up of entertaining shows.

Sony Channel unveils this witty, tongue-in-cheek series in Asia on January 17, Sunday  at 7:00pm.

IT’S LAW WITHOUT MUCH ORDER WITH SPUNKY LEGAL COMEDY BAD JUDGE
It’s law with attitude in Bad Judge, starring Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice).
Rebecca Wright is one of the most respected and prominent criminal court judges in Los Angeles. She also happens to speak her mind and acts as she wants on and off the court. From creative cases rulings to hot date nights with men, she is the town’s most intriguing woman. Beautiful and strong, she cuts a very intimidating figure, but never short of admirers.

Watch this lady judge deftly manage her career and everything else through wit, humor and innuendoes day in and day out.

Co-created by Chad Kultgen and Anne Heche, this legal comedy is spunky and one of a kind. Catch the entire season at Sony Channel. First episode premiers on January 17, Sunday at 7:30pm

YOUNGER KICKS OFF IN ASIA
Charismatic and poignant, Younger is a comedy that follows the struggle of a 40-year old woman who suddenly finds herself a single mother who needs to re-establish her career. Finding it tough to rise from the ranks in her age, she capitalizes on her youthful looks (and an almost magical make over) by passing herself off as a 20-something. What follows next is a funny and heart-warming tale of friendship and pursuit of success.

Based on the novel of the same title written by Pamela Redmond Satran, Younger stars Tony Award winner Sutton Foster ("Bunheads") Hilary Duff ("Lizzie McGuire"), Debi Mazar("Entourage") and Miriam Shor("GCB"). Its maiden season captures the journey of woman to reinvent herself and rediscover love.

Written, executive produced and directed by Darren Star ("Sex and the City"), the series kicks off its second season with back to back episode on January 17, Sunday at 8:00pm. First and exclusive on Sony Channel.
